Sound Research

Songs within the trailer.

The two directly below could be used as the music in the background when the house party is seen, this is because they are both heavy metal tracks which fit in more with a horror film that a pop song would. Also the songs are listened to by people in the age range of 16-24 year olds which is the age range for the films i researched to get my actual idea for my trailer. This all fits in so this will make my trailer more effective and appealing to its target audience.

Soundtrack.

These songs below could be used as the soundtrack for my my horror film as i have looked at other trailers and they have a lot of dark piano sounds in them so i thought it was a good effect to build suspense and tension in a trailer because of the heightened sounds in the song which in my trailer could be when there is a scary moment about to happen or if someone dies ect.

Sound Effects.

In the paranormal activity 2 trailer that i researched we hear footsteps and things like that, this is why i have also used it as i am trying to achieve the same effect. Same with the exorcism of emily rose it had thunder noises and heavy wind noised in it so therefore i will use a similar sound effect in mine.

Voice over.

For my voiceover, if i use one, i will have someone with a deep voice, this will make it more dark and will reflect on the genre better. Also i will make them have a husky voice. This video below will show what kind of voiceover i will be getting for my film if i use one:

I have my step-dad who is canadian and has a very deep voice, he will be doing my voice overs in my film if i have any.

Possible Key Shots

The shot above is from the movie "Grave Encounters" and this could be a very useful shot in my trailer as i could show my characters sat in a hallway with a silhouette at the end in the abandoned house i am filming in, there is a similar type of hallway which i could use to replicate this. This shot is effective as it shows that they are not alone in the house but they don't know it, which would be a good effect to have in my trailer to heighten the scariness of it.

This shot again is from the movie "Grave Encounters" and it shows horror as the genre quite clearly as we see blood, and it is dark around the person. it is a close up of the persons back which makes the scars stand out, it also allows us to feel closer to that person as it is a close up which draws us into the movie more.

The shot above is another from "Grave Encounters". This shot is a medium to long shot of a girl stood looking innocent in the corner, this is typical thing to see in a horror as there is usually a haunted girl. This type of shot lets us see all of the character who is in the shot so we can see what she is wearing and the location she is in, she looks like she is wearing a kind of hospital gown/ night gown which relates to my costume and props research. Also the fact that the location looks kind of like a hospital enforces that idea.

This close up of the same girl from the last shot shows her face is pale and her eyes are bagged and she looks ill/ demented/ insane. This relates to my idea for my film as i have a girl in it like this one and she will be dressed similar and her make up will be similar.

This next shot is of a hospital bed that has no mattress or anything on it, this is another thing i could include in my trailer. it is effective because it shows it is in a hospital maybe a mental hospital, this connotes horror as we have come to expect mental institutes to be involved in horror films.

This shot of someone asleep in bed being watched by a monster/ creature is another thing i may include in my trailer. I think it if effective because it clearly signifies the genre and also give a very haunting feel. Also the bedroom is in the dark with one little sidelight on, this again makes the monster stand out more. The fact that this is a wide shot allows us to see the true scale of the monster and as we can see it is above normal size which makes it a lot more menacing and scary, it also shows the closeness of the proximity to the child in bed which shows their kind of relationship.

This shot above is basically a close up of a wiji board form paranormal activity, this is because it is one of the main props in the film. I am going to use the same kind of thing in mine as i have a book that is the main prop. The fact that this is an extreme close up shows just how important the object is and that it will play a big part in the trailer.

All of the shots above are similar as they are all shot in night vision which gives a scary effect and also plays a big part in suggesting that this is a horror genre. They are all mainly wide shots of the room so that we can see exactly what is going on in the shot. They all shot the location which is the same in 3 of them which is the same kind of location i will be using. One of the shots is a close up of the antagonist which again is another i will use because it lets us feel like we are actually there which makes us more scared because we can now relate to the antagonist.

Possible Characters

These two characters are from the films Eden Lake and also The Descent. I have chosen these for my possible characters as i am thinking about having a final girl theme, this is what the roles of these two women were. I think this will work well with my film because it is a good theme for creating suspense and mystery within the horror genre.

Possible Props and Costumes

Props and Costumes for protagonist.

These are all the costumes my protagonist will be wearing, as you can see they are all quite trendy clothes as the characters are all going to be shown at a party so this is why they are dressed smart like this.

The four props at the top are, cigarettes, lighter, drink, and a pen knife, this is meant to represent the culture of teenagers in a way, also it is meant to appeal to my target audience age range. Also we see these kind of props typically in teenage thriller/horrors.

This old book prop is the main prop of the whole trailer, it is how the story is solved and also how it starts, i have put this in the protagonist category because they find it and claim it as their own, but also it could be put in the antagonist category because it is hers at the very start and she thinks she owns it.

Props and Costumes for  Antagonist.

These are the only costumes and props i will need for my antagonist as all she will have on is a hospital gown and a hospital wristband/ tag. I think because i dont have many props and thinks for the antagonist it makes her more effective as in she does not need objects to make the other characters scared because she is just pure evil.

Possible Locations

This picture above is a very good example of a location you would expect too see in a horror film, the picture shows old hospital beds all broken and rusty which alone is quite scary even in the light but as my trailer will be shot in the dark it will give and even scarier effect off if i used this location. We can also see that the walls are eroding and all of the paint is coming off the walls, this again is a typical thing to expect in a horror film and this is why i will use this in my trailer quite closely to what the picture looks like.

This shot would be a very good location as it is an abandoned house situated all on its own in the middle of nowhere, this is effective as it gives it a lonely isolated feeling. This would be a good location for me as not only does it fit into my selected genre but I also have somewhere quite similar near to where I live so I could realistically find something like this. The fact that all the windows are smashed out would be a brilliant effect as it would suggest that it is run down and damaged and that it has been there for years and people may have died there and such.

This again is similar to the one I have suggested above but i chose this picture because of the floorboards and i want that kind of floor to be in my trailer because it will include a similar kind of location.

More cracked walls that i will put into my trailer. Debris on the floor will also be a good effect for my location as again it suggests that it is a run down old place.

This is the kind of normal house that is going to be in my trailer. I have chosen this location as it looks similar to the actual one i am using, a big open looking house will be good as there will be plenty of space where i can make noises come from because there are lots of rooms.

This is the bedroom location where i will film on a night in a night vision camera, this will be the kind of layout of the location in the room. i will make sure that there is a bit of free space in the room so i can put shadows and things there so i can make it look more scary.

In a part of my trailer there will be a bit where the characters pass through a graveyard, i think this one looks like a good location as we can see that it is very dark and the trees are lifeless, this is what i want to achieve with my trailer. I have access to a place like this so i could get a similar kind of location quite easily.

These grassy area's and and tunnels are also what my characters are going to be passing through, i think these kind of locations will look very good and will make the trailer a lot scarier, They will be used on a night time to heighten the scariness and tension.

Feedback to my Pitch

This is my audience feedback to my pitch about my final products and about my research and planning. From the feedback that i have got i now know what parts of my product are good and what needs improvement. What could do with improvement is the whole of my research time management, i need to improve my work rate and also the quality of the content that goes into my work. Another thing i need to do is think through my trailer idea more, i need to think about how realistic the storyline is. Then again some people have said they line my storyline but i can see that it could do with some sort of tweaking.

Video Discussing Chosen Genre

Video Discussing Research

audience research

FOcus group. what will i ask. what will i show them. what will i do once i have answers.

The comparable profile above is the one for the film Fright Night which is a horror move. As you can see the audience for this is 65% 15-25 year olds. This is the audience i intend to aim for as i want it to appeal most to a younger audience. We can also see that males and females are equally for the gender to will appear to, again i wish to aim the same sort of gender because i want it to be able to be seen by males and females and that they both will enjoy it and so it is not orientated towards one gender. Another thing we can see is the Class of people it has been appealing to, the C1 to the DE class.

This is the comparable profile of the paranormal activity 3 film, this film is my main inspiration for my trailer so this is the best comparable profile for me to follow. Again we can see that the 15-25 year old category is the most popular category, this is definitely the kind of audience i want to appeal to. The gender of my audience is going to be evenly spread just like on the paranormal activity reader profile where it is 53% male and 47% female which shows how close the difference is. This Class category is Class C1 through to DE and they are all similar in percentage, I want to have the same kind of audience in the class category also because it appeals to most people therefore being a very popular film.

mood board

This is a mood board showing my chosen genre, I have chosen these pictures to represent my genre because they are some of the most stereotypical things to see in a horror film or in the horror genre. We expect to see knives, blood, monsters, possessed people and dark locations and settings.

textual analysis

Posters

Above there are some film posters which advertise the same kind of film that i am hoping to replicate. To be able to replicate them successfully i am going to have to make sure i get the design for my poster correct as i want it to be as believable as possible.

As you can see the paranormal activity one, two and three are very similar which shows continuity between all 3 films, this is the way i want my film poster to be, simple, easy to replicate so people can suspect a sequel. I am also going to use the same kind of locations in my film trailer, eg, inside the innocent looking house but then at night it will be dark and scary.

The posters look very plain but i think this is effective because it makes the picture stand out, this is also helped by the black background which makes the text stand out.

My Chosen Genre

In conclusion to me discussing the 4 different genre's that i have analyse above, i really think that best option of film genre for me is to do a Horror film. The reason for this is because it is realistically better for me to get props and costumes and get the locations that i need for filming. There are locations that i can access quite easily as they are quite close to where i live and they have the right kind of mood for a horror film if i could go there when it is dark. There is an old church that i can access, there is an old abandoned house and various side streets and cuts that i can also access. Another thing that will be quite easily accessible are props and costumes, this is because i could go to any sort of charity shop and buy an old black long coat with a hood for the antagonist to wear. I can also get some black boots and black leather gloves for the antagonist to wear too. I have clothes of my own that the protagonist could wear and also my friends could help me out with that. I could get props such as a fake knife or something like that. I can get sound effects and music as i could make them on garage band, also I have friends that are in a band and i could get them to play something and record it. All of these things above will help me in making the narrative set pieces that i need, i am able to get all of the cast, locations, costumes, sounds and props that i need to make this trailer. There are other films that have inspired me to make a horror film, such as Paranormal Activity 1,2 and 3. This is because they are all filmed like a camcorder home video kind of film, this is effective in many ways, such as they make the viewer feel closer to the characters as they are kind of drawn in to the home video feel. Another thing that is effective is that you never see the actual antagonist, you just see what happens inside of the house and you see a person get possessed by the antagonist which makes it scarier because we never get closure on what it actually was that was haunting them as we don't see it. Also the locations in the films are all effective as they are in a normal everyday house which again makes it seem more real and that it could happen to you, this is effective because it makes it scarier and it makes you hope that everything will be alright so that we get a definite ending to the paranormal activity in the house.

Summer Research Into Market Campaign

Through the summer i researched the film "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2" in how the film was marketed and promoted. This film poster above is an ideal example of what kind of posters were placed around towns, in bus stops, in shops, in magazines and so on. The phase "it all ends" is also very effective in the way that they have marketed this film, this is because people will read this and they know that this is the final Harry Potter film and that in its own will get more people coming to watch it.

Again here is another way that the film was marketed, by using a popular film magazine and putting a picture of the cast on the front along with the large "Harry Potter" type. This magazine is sold in lots of major retailers around the world, people will see this everyday and that would have made people look at the front of the magazine and then would go and see the film. Also people who buy the magazine will see it and also will get to read about the film inside and that again will help on how many people go and see the film.

Another way that they marketed it was by releasing teaser trailers which they would put on television throughout the day as it was a 12A certificate which allows children younger than 12 to go and see it with parents. The fact that this was advertised on television all day is so that it can appeal to all audiences of all ages. This again is a clever way of marketing as more people of different ages will want to go and see it.

Sold $476 million in tickets around the world on it's opening weekend.
"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2,” the first film in the series to be released in premium-priced 3-D, sold $168.6 million in tickets in North America alone — the biggest opening weekend in history. “The Dark Knight” previously held that record with $158.4 million.
